Communications Manager – Media Relations

Working under the guidance of the Senior Manager of Communications, the Communications Manager – Media Relations has a firmwide responsibility for strategizing and executing an effective external communications program to raise visibility of the Firm with key journalists and other media and key constituents across various geographies and industries. The candidate is expected to perform all responsibilities with a commitment to providing superior service to the Firm’s clients, attorneys, advisors, and business services; contribute to an atmosphere of collaboration and teamwork; and strives to excel. This role also supports certain business development initiatives and oversees the communications coordinator on functions relating to external media and communications initiatives.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops first drafts of written communication plans to raise the Firm’s visibility and profile specifically in the area of subject matter expertise; executes on these, where appropriate and necessary. Helps to define policies and protocols for lawyers and business services employees to refer to.
  • Cultivates relationships with key reporters and facilitates introductions to key thought leaders and potential sources; serves as the liaison between media and lawyers to help create mutually beneficial opportunities for interaction between the two over the long term.
  • Oversees media monitoring, press highlights, and bylined article placement processes by the communications coordinator.
  • Provides editorial guidance and oversight relating to the development of awards nominations, surveys, and other communications by the communications coordinator.
  • Provides supporting role in supervising PR agencies on key PR initiatives.
  • Manages the collection, verification, and promotion of Firm deals and matters (from attorneys) for internal and external distribution and logging.
  • Works closely with marketing colleagues, attorneys, and other parties and thought leaders on all aspects of strategic communications – including content development, messaging, delivery, and measurement.
  • Supports other strategic communications initiatives through research, writing, editing, project management, and other tasks.
  • Plays a supporting role in day-to-day management of content updates for the intranet and select portions of the Firm’s external website.
  • Interfaces directly with the Firm’s attorneys, including partners, and other individuals across operational departments on various communications touch points.
  • Assists occasionally with staffing events held by the Firm (i.e. holiday party).


JOB SPECIFICATIONS:


Education: A 4-year College Degree required.


Experience: Minimum of 6 years of experience in marketing communications and media and public relations. Prior law firm experience is desirable.


Skills and Abilities:
Ability to develop and deliver executive-level communications plans, messaging documents, research reports, press releases, media pitches, and coverage updates; ability to act with a high degree of integrity and confidentiality; ability to synthesize research and knowledge base in order to provide sophisticated marketing and business development recommendations to partners and associates; strong written and oral communication skills; ability to manage multiple projects concurrently; ability to counsel attorneys and staff on communications matters; ability to interface with media and other third parties in both proactive and reactive contexts; outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of people and departments.
