The Manager – Business Development works with lawyers, Business Development, Communications and Creative Services staff members to assist with efforts to generate increased business for the Firm. He/she will leverage research, writing, technical and communication skills to create materials of very high standards and spearhead initiatives of the Capital Markets practice. The manager will work closely with the partners and help the Business Development Manager in business planning and strategy. The manager will report to the Business Development Manager for Capital Markets.


The scheduled hours for this position are 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The incumbent may be required to work overtime depending on the needs of the practice area lawyers and business development department.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Practice Development
  • Assist partners in preparing targeted presentations and meeting materials (pitch books, brochures, trifolds, duofolds and deal sheets), in a manner that effectively communicates the Firm’s relevant experience and articulates clear reasons why the Firm should be retained. Under the direction of the Manager:
  • Identify relevant transactional or regulatory precedents by industry, geography and type of transaction or matter.
  • Customize materials for the target client or prospect.
  • Supervise production aspects (editing, fact checking, proofreading, assembling) to ensure materials are delivered accurately and on time.
  • Prepare relevant research and supporting materials for client meetings.
  • Advise partners regarding Business Development trip itinerary planning.
  • Assist the Business Development Manager in creating new marketing collaterals, work closely with Creative Services in adhering to the style and branding standard of such collaterals.
  • Maintain housekeeping of deal lists and all Business Development materials for the practice.
  • Assist the Business Development Manager on collecting deal information for the practice from various Firm resources and database.
  • Keep the Securities Tracking Tool fully up to date so as to share deal information with the rest of the Business Development team, be responsible for league table accreditation and ranking analysis through Thomson Reuters and the Bloomberg terminal.
  • Assist the Business Development Manager on the preparation of materials for the quarterly meetings with the Capital Markets group partners.
  • Assist the Business Development Manager on opportunity spotting and intelligence gathering by using the Firm’s research platforms.
  • Participate in the Capital Markets group monthly luncheons and take notes for the Business Development team.
  • Coordinate competitive intelligence research, used to update lawyers on market trends.
  • Follow Firm news, note wins and maintain the practice experience database and updates in the CRM system. Working with the Manager, draft compelling marketing descriptions which communicate unique aspects of the deal and keep metrics up to date (type of deal, value, currency, etc.). Collaborate with worldwide staff to ensure non-English marketing descriptions are updated.
  • Work with Communications on submissions to directories, guides, awards and other surveys.
  • Coordinate content aspects of marketing conferences and other events and in this capacity; work with the Special Events department.
  • Coordinate efforts with the lawyers and the Communications team in the practice’s thought leadership pieces.
  • Coordinate with the Communications team in the practice’s visibility program.
  • Coordinate efforts with the Communications team on internal communications on S&C This Week.
  • Coordinate efforts with the Digital Marketing team to keep practice details on external website up to date.


Qualifications
  • Excellent writing/editing, proofreading, grammar and research skills (a writing and editing test is required).
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with a high level of attention to detail.
  • Understanding of transactional terminology and processes, financial information, as well as understanding of corporate and litigation terminology.
  • Proficiency in standard spreadsheet, database, word processing and presentation applications (e.g., Excel, Dynamics, Access, Word, PowerPoint and SharePoint are a must), as well as with a variety of online and new media information resources. Knowledge of any CRM system is also helpful. The Firm provides additional training in core software programs, if needed, to enhance skills and speed of work.
  • An ability to handle time-sensitive requests from multiple lawyers, across time zones, and to generate quality work product in a fast-paced environment. Deadline oriented with a clear understanding of priorities. Ability to work in a highly demanding environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to make decisions independently as well as being a team player is essential.
  • Discreteness in handling confidential information is essential.
  • Readiness to share knowledge and cross-train other team members is important.
  • Proficiency in social media and website contents is preferred.

Education and/or experience
  • Three or more years of experience working for a law firm, financial institution or other professional services firm.
  • BA or equivalent required. Higher degrees a plus.
  • Proficiency in other languages a plus.
